Where does Greemile.co.uk buy the carbon credit?
Greenmile.co.uk buys carbon credit contracts on the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme ("EU ETS" for short). You can see copies of the credits we have bought here.
Does buying a carbon credit really help?
Yes it does. If we allocate the carbon credit to you then you have stopped someone else emitting that amount of carbon.
Can I buy one for someone else?
The transaction description can be anything you choose it to be - and so you can choose how it is described.
Do I have to get new credits each year?
No. A tonne of carbon is a tonne of carbon and will be the same, for example, in 10 years time. So, if you stop someone emitting 50 tonnes of carbon in 2007 through greenmile.co.uk then the fact that you might choose to emit 5 tonnes of carbon in each of the next ten years is not relevant - you are still carbon neutral. You bought 50 tonnes and you have used 50 tonnes.
What do I get from buying a carbon credit?
Accessing carbon credit through greenmile.co.uk means you have paid your way as an emitter of carbon. You can show people that you have done so by describing your use in the transaction - if you want to. We will also send you a sticker that you can put on a car windscreen, rather like a tax disc, as well as some luggage stickers that will let people know that you have paid your way.
Why don't other carbon offset schemes just allocate carbon emission rights rather than investing in projects they choose?
We don't know - that's why we set up the business - because we couldn't find one that did.
Does greenmile.co.uk have the UK Government "gold standard" seal of approval?
We will investigate whether we should ask for it - but what we do is so transparent that we don't need to reassure our customers any more than we already do.
Does greenmile.co.uk make a profit or is it a not-for-profit organisation?
Greenmile.co.uk is a business. We may make a profit and it may also make a loss - we hope it's a profit!
